Crazy Quilt Picture Frame |
|
|
The wondrous and soft photo transfer is done on China silk. Because there is writing on the photo, it was necessary to
use a translucent silk so that the image could be reversed and writing be correct. Embellishments include: Silk ribbon embroidery, silk ribbon ruching and manipulation, handrolled roses of 7mm
and 13mm silk and rayon ribbons. Lace: 5 different kinds that are embellished with ribbons and beads. Larger embellishments: There is a bird fetish of abalone shell and 3 different
examples of antique buttons. Beads used are: Freshwater pearls, Czech seed beads and bugle beads. Embroidery stitches used are: Feather stitch with |

thread, in the form of a vine, detached chain for buds and leaves using silk ribbon, colonial knots for buds, spiderweb rose, Montano
knot, Japanese ribbon stitch (side ribbon stitch). The frame, front and back, is constructed of custom cut matboard which is padded with craft fleece and covered with white bengaline. The border of the frame
is a hand twisted cord made of silk ribbon and pearl cotton. |

Wildflower Sampler |
 |
 |
|
When I began to do silk ribbon embroidery in 1993, the only books available featured Australian flowers and
wildflowers. I thought that was kind of tedious, since some of the named flowers didn't look like the flower by the same name that we have in the U.S. So I set to work to design some American
wildflowers. This is a sampler of some of those that I designed. A nine patch sampler includes the Shooting Star, Indian Paintbrush, a Huckleberry Bush, Kinnickinnick and Beargrass. I have
also embroidered the Dog-toothed Violet, the Prickly Pear, Rocky Mountain Iris and the Montana state flower Bitterroot. |

Concertina Rose (Folded Rose) |
|
|
You will need 3/8" or 1/2" wide ribbon. A ribbon that is stiffer works best. Common satin ribbon is great. I
like to use 1/2" wide ribbon. You can use even wider ribbon if you wish. The wider the ribbon, the longer the ribbon will need to be. For 1/2" wide ribbon cut about 10" of
ribbon. You will also need a needle threaded with all purpose thread. Fold the ribbon in half crosswise. Then make square folds, one on top of the other, until you have used all the
ribbon. Grasp the ends of the ribbon with your thumb and index finger and let the folded end go. With the |

other hand pull one end of the ribbon through your thumb and finger while still holding the folds secure. You are gathering up the popped out
ribbon into a concise little rose. When the rose has gathered and you like it, sew across the bottom under the rose, tacking it firmly. Wind the thread around the base of the rose 2 or 3 times.
Secure the thread and sew the rose to the desired place on your design. |
