Crazy Quilt Stitch Exchange

These are her examples shared in the Crazy Quilt Stitch Exchange.

Crazy Quilt Block

A few days before I received the packages from the Embellishment Swap, I had started on this 6" block.  When the packages arrived, I decided to add at least one thing from each bag (15 bags in all) to the block.  In many cases, I used more than one piece from a bag.  I chose threads, buttons, beads, laces, trims, ribbons, rick rack, motifs, and sequins from the bags, and just piled them on.  A few of the embellishments were mine.  It's a little gaudy; but I like it that way!  I must confess that even though I am a member of the Crazy Quilt Mailing List, this is my first attempt at it.

Beaded Tree

The tree branches were stitched with Kanagawa (YLI) silk buttonhole twist from the outside in towards the trunk using a feather stitch; changing to a stem stitch to complete the trunk.  One lazy daisy stitch was placed on either side of the feather stitch to make the leaves (use several colors to give it more dimension).  The tree was completed by sewing one seed bead to the end of each feather stitch.  The flower garden was embroidered using silk ribbon. This piece was stitched in the center of an old damask napkin, and the entire piece was tea-dyed when finished, to give it an antique look.

Floral Bouquet

Embroidered on a child's denim vest, the base of the design was a combination of feather and lazy daisy stitches. The leaves were embroidered using the ribbon stitch.  There are three rolled roses made of  4mm and 7mm ribbon, and the bouquet was filled in with French knots and seed beads to complete it.

Floral Bouquet On Blazer Lapels

Embroidered on the lapels of a man's wool blazer purchased from a thrift store, the design is basically the same as the bouquet on the vest shown above.  It just has fewer French knots used as a filler around the roses.  I consider this design my signature look, as I use it often.

I recently added to our pattern and kit line the instructions on making this embroidered floral bouquet.

This is lower on the left lapel.

Bridal Headpiece

This was a commissioned piece; actually it was my first commissioned piece. The bridal headpiece (shown here without the veil) was constructed using a padded headband as a base.  All of the flowers and leaves were made of 1" wide French wired ribbon, and the entire piece was sewn together with #3 and #5 Japanese bugle beads and seed beads.

Floral Spray

This piece was started with odds and ends from my experimentation, and also some samples made in a few classes.  There is a small amount of vintage ribbon here (the rose-colored five petal flower with the gold center), but most of the ribbon is new.

The purple variegated flower with the button center is made of vintage rayon ribbon; the the velvet was then crushed and dyed to look old.

This floral spray was sewn together, using a very lightweight crinoline as a base.

Circles Of The East Pillow

At the Quilt Festival in Houston in October, my cousin Becky and I took this class from Kumiko Sudo.  Based on her new book Circles of the East, each of us appliqued a circular block using this jacaranda blossom design (page 4 of her book) based on ancient Japanese family crests or kamon.  The first picture shows the applique in process, the second shows a closeup of the pillow cover before I stuffed the pillow in and sewed up the other side, and the last picture shows the finished pillow.  Even though the entire class had basically the same package of vintage kimono and new cotton fabrics, everyone's block looked totally different because of our individual color choices and placement.

This hydrangea was made in Kumiko Sudo's Fabled Flowers class (she has a wonderful book by the same name).  The additional samples were other flowers made in the class, and her book shows many, many more.  We used both old and new Japanese fabrics for a distinctive oriental look; but these flowers could be made out of any soft fabrics.  I've seen the hydrangea made of hand-dyed fabrics, and it was really beautiful.  Her flowers could be used as a great embellishment to any crazy quilt project.

Crocheted Pincushion With Ribbonwork Flowers

Made as a gift for a friend, this small pincushion was crocheted with variegated crochet cotton, and was embellished with vintage-looking flower stamens, a small ribbon flower, ombre ribbon leaves, and seed beads.

Beret

This is a present that was made for a gift exchange.  It's a black wool felt beret, embroidered with silk ribbon embroidery, silk buttonhole twist, and embellished with metallic seed beads.  This beret was embroidered using the same techniques given in the Ribbon Embroidered Floral Bouquet pattern; a recent addition to our pattern and kit line.
