Crazy Quilt Block

This is my first attempt at crazy quilting, begun in the fall of 1995 and completed in the summer of 1997.  It is about my wonderful, deceased Tonkinese cat Toonces.  You can see him dreaming, snacking, and hiding among the bleeding hearts.  The image at the top right is Toon in his red cape, here transformed to a wing as he flies off to wherever he went next.  As I worked on this piece, I thought about pets and the silly pleasures they bring.  I also spent many hours on questions of grief, separation, and loss, whether caused by death or the way people simply wander into and out of our lives.  Obviously, I have many more thoughts that I want to interpret in future quilts.

"Dragon Queen"  is a very elegant and artistic woman.  She loves her ethnic fabrics and wears them with great aplomb.  She is generous with everything, and knows more about textiles and techniques than any of us mere mortals.  Her wit and resiliance are exceptional.

"Brat" wants us to know her as strong, hardworking, and above all very reasonable.  Her more impulsive and fantastic side comes out in her work, which is delicate, complex, and moody in its colors.  She is the very best of friends, loyal and willing to tell you just what she thinks.

"Sunshine" is not a party animal or frivolous as her costume suggests.  She loves people and has a warm and giving nature.  She is highly accomplished at many things, and has determination and discipline.  SSN's shoes are her special power that helps her run around and get everything done.

"Wandering Jane Elizabeth" is famed among the goddesses for her intelligence and wonderful array of skills.  She is a woman who reveals herself slowly, so that when you think you know her she reaches into another pocket and reveals a new aspect of her character.  She is lively, funny and able to cope with a varied and demanding set of responsibilities.

Of "Miss Meannie" what can be said?  The dearest friend everyone loves to hate, hates to love, and who manages to win every time.  Her true and fabulous nature is fighting its way out past the vintage lace and pearl button of her Meanie persona.  Behind this gentle garb is her sensual, gifted, brilliant self.  The acid wit and rapier tongue are tricks to rivet your attention; read between the lines and her humor, generosity and natural ability to instruct and to learn are there.
